Discretionary Housing Payment

What Discretionary Housing Payments cover and do not cover, who can apply, how to apply for payments and how to make an appeal.

Claiming a rent deposit or rent in advance

You can only apply for an advance if you:

  • are homeless
  • threatened with homelessness
  • have a housing need and you have already seen a member of the Homeless Prevention or Housing Solutions Team

When you cannot apply

You will not qualify for help with a deposit or rent in advance if:

  • you have already moved into your property or have already signed a tenancy agreement - you should not make arrangements to move until the application has been decided
  • we decide that the property is unaffordable for you or you have sufficient income or savings to pay for this yourself

How to apply

You'll need to provide:

  • full name
  • full address
  • contact details
  • brief reason why you require assistance
