We can do this if your home has been adapted to meet the needs of a disabled person. This could include:
- a physical disability
- learning difficulties
- mental health issues
Your home must also have at least one of these to qualify:
- a room which is mainly used by you as a disabled person and is essential, or of major importance, to your welfare
- an extra bathroom or extra kitchen which is necessary to meet your needs as a disabled person
- enough floor space to use a wheelchair - you must need to use the wheelchair indoors
The person responsible for paying the bill usually applies for the reduction even if they are not the disabled person – for example, the disabled person may be a child.
What you need to provide
You'll need to provide either:
- a letter from the disabled person's doctor, social worker or occupational therapist – this is to confirm they need these special features of the property because of their disability
- a disabled certificate
You will need to print out the disabled certificate and get your GP to fill it out.
You will also need your Council Tax account number on all letters you send us.
If you do not provide evidence then you cannot submit your application.
How to apply
Complete the online application and upload with supporting evidence.
After you've applied for a discount
You must still pay the amount on your Council Tax bill until you hear from us.
If you qualify for the discount, we’ll check every year that you're still entitled to it.
Backdating your discount
We usually will not backdate a discount because it is almost impossible to verify. We might consider it if you provide strong evidence and our internal checks support the claim.
If your circumstances change
Use our enquiry form to:
- tell us if your circumstances change in the meantime as this may affect your discount
- cancel your discount
