Simpler recycling for businesses
Simpler recycling is a national scheme that covers all of England.
The aim is to simplify and standardise the materials we all recycle, including both businesses and households.

What simpler recycling means for businesses
The scheme began for businesses on 31 March 2025. It applies to all businesses with 10 or more full-time employees.
Your business must:
- separate out your dry recycling and food waste from general waste
- use a licensed waste carrier for collections
- separate plastic, paper and card, glass, metals (cans, tins, foil), and food waste from your general waste
If we find that you and your business are not meeting the new legislation, you:
- run the risk of being issued a Compliance Notice by the Environment Agency
- may be liable for fines or prosecution
