Who can claim Council Tax Reduction

You could be eligible for Council Tax Reduction (CTR) if you’re on a low income or claim certain benefits.

Council Tax Reduction aims to protect the most vulnerable in the community and makes sure that the following people will continue to receive the same level of support they previously received:

  • pensioners
  • people with disabilities who are in receipt of Disability Living Allowance or Personal Independence Payment
  • those receiving a War Disablement Pension, War Widow’s or War Widower’s Pension

How the reduction is worked out

The reduction is based on:

  • your age
  • your circumstances (for example, number of children, residency status, other adults living with you)
  • the money you have coming in – this includes benefits, savings, pensions and all household income
  • the amount of Council Tax you have to pay
